Dear Minister Wang,

distinguished guests,

It is my honour to hold a few words on behalf of the Berlin Senate.Department of Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises to you at the China Household Appliance Innovation Achievements Promotion Event during the IFA, the world’s leading fair for consumer electronics and

household appliances.

My special greetings towards guests from abroad who took a long way from e.g. China to take part in tonight’s ceremony.

Since the beginning of 2019, Berlin has increased its capacities for economic relations with China through its first office abroad, the Berlin Business Liaison Desk in Beijing. We greatly appreciate this step. After only 8 months of work, we already look back to increasing demands for our consultation through office in Beijing to assist both Chinese investors to move to Berlin and also help Berlin enterprises in their interests in with partners in China.

IFA presents a great example of Berlin-China cooperation, not only through Berlin Messe, who in two weeks from now will hold the fourth mirrored IFA fair, the CE China 2019 in Guangzhou, but also through tonight’s award ceremony.

To witness developments and honour best innovations and ideas in household appliances has already been a tradition for the Berlin Senate, who have supported the Chinese Household Appliances Innovation Awards since its first award ceremony was hold in 2009. It is my great pleasure as the Chief Representative of Berlin’s Economy in China to take part in tonight’s ceremony and thereby to highlight economic ties between Berlin and China.

We acknowledge the continuous success of your event as a symbol of our excellent German-Chinese cooperation. CHEARI actively supports this cooperation by celebrating the award ceremony at IFA. Thank you, Vice-President Ge Fengliang for doing so.

And congratulations to Mr. Heithecker for the success story of IFA and your ongoing cooperation with CE China.

Berlin has strong and long-standing ties with China.

China has been a close trading partner for Berlin for many years now. With a volume of about 923 million EUR, China was the second largest foreign market for Berlin companies in 2018.

There is a growing presence of Chinese companies in the German capital for its close relations with the German government, its innovation landscape, an unbeaten amount of new talents that graduate from one of Europe’s highest densities of universities.

Berlin’s Chinese business community rapidly expands, and companies from China that have settled down in Berlin include Huawei, CRRC, Hainan Airlines, Tech Code, State Grid, Bytedance, Tellhow, but also Startups like Liangdao and others. Like German companies also take advantage of Berlin’s proximity to universities, research institutes and innovative companies, as such Cisco, SAP, Telekom and Deutsche Bank have relocated innovation departments to Berlin.

In ICT alone, we currently count more than 120 traditional institutions and roughly 500 Startups. With about 70% of German Venture Capital investments flowing into Berlin, the German Capital Region is clearly Germany’s Startup Venture Capital top-spot, ranking among top 5 startup investment locations in whole Europe.

To support new investments from abroad, we have a range of partnerships with China that help to build bridges.

We are twinned with Beijing, which focuses in economic terms on the topics of ICT, mobility, new energy and our cluster topics in the German Capital Area. Berlin further has built strong ties with e.g. Shanghai for startup cooperation. Berlin is just about to send a new startup delegation to both Shanghai and Shenzhen by the end of November this year.

Another great platform for Berlin-Chinese business exchange develops through our Asia-Pacific Week, our forum for dialogue and cooperation with our Asian partners, with China taking up a prominent part. The next APW will take place in summer 2020 and we look forward to welcome

innovative partners from China to join and network with us in Berlin.

Last but not least, Berlin greatly benefits of the digital hub initiative of theFederal Government Berlin. The project is built to mainly create hubs for FinTech and Internet of Things - IoT.

I am excited to learn more about the digitalization of Chinese household productions, the idea of a smart home in China, the digital communication between company and consumer as well as between consumer and product tonight.

Berlin can be an excellent partner for Chinese companies, and Berliner companies are very interested in working together with you.

Thank you for your attention!
